Modern Music Opinion #3: Shakira is not mocking Beyoncé
Reacting to latest viral conversation on Shakira's Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran tour
So, Shakira kicked off her Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran tour. Many people had much to say about the comparisons to Beyoncé’s Renaissance tour. Everything from the dancing, posing, and outfits had some questions about how inspired Shakira was by Beyoncé. While amusing, I want to clarify that Shakira is not mocking Beyoncé.
I find it a little irritating how when one veteran artist does something similar to another veteran artist, it’s looked upon as mockery. Two years ago, Shakira attended Renaissance and seemed to have a blast. “I was working! I definitely can’t tour with as many trucks as Beyoncé, but I was taking notes.” She stated after attending in 2023, but I don’t think she was trying to copy her.
Did anyone not see she hugged Beyoncé during her Grammy performance or collaborated on a “Beautiful Liar” duet eight years ago? People must have forgotten or at least thought these women simply admired each other.
Need I else mention that Shakira is her performer? Her dancing and stage presence are immense same way Beyoncé is for herself. Visually, I think Shakira wanted the same glamorous visuals as the Renaissance. While I can see where the outfit colors and the choreography can be eerily familiar, I don’t think that’s the point. Shakira happens to pop and lock on certain songs like “She Wolf” occasionally.
She reportedly used Tate Towers, the same stage production company that commissioned The Eras Tour. Shakira doesn’t have anything to gain from copying Beyoncé when she’s been performing years before her.
I think every veteran artist is looking for that spectacular appearance for their show. They just so happened to have similar branded stage directions.
I think a lot of female artists pull from each other unexpectedly. I hate how we have to pit two very successful female artists against each other.
Shakira is in her lane as a Latin superstar, and Beyoncé is a global star in her own right as well. We should focus on how the music is presented rather than comparing these women against each other. We hope to see these two women perform on stage for the first time. Let’s just celebrate that these women are still making music decades later. I hope Shakira’s world tour goes well.
