Mariah Carey's "Type Dangerous" isn't bad, but isn't a splash either
Reviewing the pros and cons of Mariah Carey's latest single, "Type Dangerous"
Vocal legend, Mariah Carey had a vision of love but after 35 years, she now likes them dangerous.
It’s been nearly five years since Mariah has shown up with a new lead single. Although, as of this writing, her new album isn’t confirmed, it appears that her latest, “Type Dangerous,” could be her lead.
It’s not bad, nor is it surprising, but could it be better? Yes. Mariah’s pen never fails her when she writes her verses. It was hilarious seeing her talk of all her exes and throwing shade at three female haters. I think it’s Mariah in her element. As strong as her references are, the hook could’ve been equal as well. Production was a solid 90s hip-hop groove with not too much vocal prowess.
Regardless, it’s a sexy and sassy hip-hop soul single.
You’re probably wondering, “Mariah has nothing to prove anymore. She’s been in this business for over 30 years.” And yes, I agree, however, there comes a point where an artist shouldn’t be too comfortable.
“Type Dangerous” just sticks the easy landing. If you compare this to “Obsessed”, it’s obvious what’s the better urban record for her. While I enjoy how she continues her hip-hop essence, the song lacks completion. Watching Rakim on stage with her during her BET award performance proved how much the song needed a rap verse. It already has an Eric B. & Rakim sample, to begin with, so why not go all the way like when she collaborated with Bone Thugs N Harmony in the '90s?
However, knowing that Rakim rapped on the record gives me hope that this potential remix could be on her MC16 album. I think her devoted fans would appreciate this song more with that bonus addition.
If the song didn’t feel complete, the music video could’ve at least made up for the downfall. I couldn’t imagine seeing a more AI fusion video from her. Let’s see the pro’s, she looks beautiful in her glam aesthetic, there’s animation and she make men disappear.
The cons are what appears as a “It’s Like That” homage turns into disappointed surprises. The Mr. Beast cameo wasn’t the surprise we expected, but her catchphrase always sticks the landing. I just would’ve liked to see a more organic production.
So, what does “Type Dangerous” tell us about Mariah Carey’s new era? Well, it tells us that Mariah is at her most confident. She doesn’t want to hit her whistles to prove a point, and she will always rep for hip-hop. I like that veteran artists like her can find the fun in making music decades later. It’s certainly gonna be a fun era for with her new Gamma record deal.
I honestly like this for her, but I hope she has better songs up her sleeve. I’m only asking for one better hook song. As a lamb (Mariah Carey fan name), I can’t wait to see what she releases next no matter what. I can’t wait to stream her next single.
What are your opinions of her latest single? When do you think her albums is coming?
